Given their small size, you
might decide to do so nightly. Of course, if you??™ve made specific changes, you should
back up the applicable system database right away. For example, adding jobs should
prompt a backup of MSDB, and changes to the instance configuration should prompt a
backup of the master database. Be sure to have at least one copy of the resource database
on hand. If you apply a new service pack, the resource database will be changed, so you

should make a new backup of it immediately. Rather than repeat information in each
sample scenario for system databases (both the schedule and the restore documentation),
I??™ll assume you??™ve already established system database backup schemes.
One other quick point: none of these scenarios or templates are mutually exclusive.
It??™s possible that you??™re looking to minimize your backup window while minimizing data
loss. The key is to be clear about why you??™re selecting a particular backup scheme and
understand how it affects other backup/restore scenarios that you may also want to
achieve.
