Although executives
hate this type of answer, ???things just happen??? is a legitimate explanation to an issue in
some circumstances.
Also, beware of anyone presenting a turn-key solution. Some may claim that their
product or design needs no maintenance and will work flawlessly once configured correctly.
This is rarely true. Maintenance and troubleshooting time should always be
included as a cost to any undertaking involving technology.
SQL Agent
I??™ve examined business and technical constraints and presented a more abstract view of
backup/recovery plans. Now it??™s time to switch gears and talk about the technical specifics
of implementing a plan. Automation is the first issue to look at.
For the purposes of this book, I??™m assuming that you??™ll do all scheduling via the SQL
Agent service. However, any number of scheduling applications could execute T-SQL
scripts to achieve the same results. I??™m going to focus on SQL Agent because it??™s already
incorporated into SQL Server, most of us are already familiar with it, and it includes
enhanced functionality when it comes to configuring automated SQL Server activities.
