The query optimizer does it in SQL Server??”
why shouldn??™t you as a DBA?
Here??™s the question: how much time should you put into exploring alternate
approaches? From a managerial point of view, being presented with more than one
option is almost always preferable to being presented with the solution. Always come to
the table with at least two options. Not only will it help legitimize a selected approach,
but you just may think of new constraints or possibilities that hadn??™t occurred to you.
Ongoing Testing and Design Review
Often sacrificed at the altar because ???we don??™t have time to do this,??? testing and continual
review of the backup/recovery plan is perhaps the most important item not to
sacrifice. Very few systems are static; they??™re constantly evolving in both design and
usage. As a result, backup/recovery needs may change. And changes to business
requirements can also create new technical constraints, again leading to the need to
change backup and recovery plans. You need to review your BRP periodically to
ensure that its design remains valid given the business and technical requirements
and constraints.
