"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

It isn??™t particularly helpful in
your career either.
CHAPTER 5 n CREATING A BACKUP/RECOVERY PLAN 108
The primary technical constraints are
??? Hardware capabilities
??? Personnel availability
??? Portability
??? Cost
Hardware Capabilities
There seems to be a growing trend to consolidate hardware wherever possible. While
consolidation seems prudent to keep hardware and maintenance costs down, it does
present challenges when designing a backup/recovery plan. I??™ve established that hardware
is one of the primary disaster categories. Consolidating processes, even backup/
recovery ones, can add significant risk in terms of greater fallout from hardware disasters.
All too often, hardware is approved and purchased before any attempt is made at
identifying the actual hardware requirements??”the ???blank check??? temptation. I can??™t
emphasize enough what a bad idea this is. First, you??™re taking advantage of your colleagues;
even if you??™re in a highly political work environment, this will ultimately find a
way to boomerang back to you. Second, while it may seem like you??™re able to purchase
way more capacity than you need??”whether it??™s additional storage area network (SAN)
storage, a tape array, or tape loader??”you may ultimately find that you underestimated
what you needed.
