Once you do
that, you??™ll need to deal with the ongoing management of both the work being done and
the business relationship itself, such as invoicing procedures, regular status assessments,
and so on. Ultimately, all of these things could require a great deal of time, not just from a
management, but also from your technical staff as they help assess the progress of any
work being done.
nTip Beware anyone offering a turnkey solution. I have nothing against consulting firms; in fact, I have my
own. I do, however, believe that consulting services or staff augmentation should always play the role of
augmenting in-house staff and capabilities. If a consulting firm builds a complete solution for you, you??™ll be
dependent on that consulting firm to maintain that solution. Usually even the most thorough documentation
won??™t suffice when it comes to maintaining anything in which your staff had no involvement.
Maintenance Cost
Maintenance is a truly abstract cost and usually one that is never considered??”that
is, until its effects are felt. The range of costs that could be categorized as maintenance
is quite broad.
