These products will absolutely have
a price tag. Most scenarios come with two price tags: the initial purchase and a maintenance
fee, which is usually required for support and upgrades. The former is a one-time
purchase; the latter is usually a yearly fee at 5-20% of the cost of the initial product.
The same nonquantifiable costs that occur when selecting hardware apply when
selecting software purchases as well. How well is the product supported? Is the company
at risk of disappearing? What is the learning curve for using the project? Is formal training
required?
Consulting Cost
Consulting is yet another item with an inevitable price tag, but hiring consultants is often
a necessity to get a BRP or disaster recovery undertaking off the ground. Too many companies
are running on a shoestring budget, and the on-site staff members have difficulty
just keeping their heads above water, much less pursuing a proactive initiative.
Choosing a consulting company can be (and really should be) a time-consuming
process, unless you already have a consultant whom you??™re comfortable with.
