"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

However, I don??™t find this a statistic worth
advertising. I would never even consider having a file of that size, whether it??™s a database file or a log
file, at least not in the near future. Why? One word: portability.
Hopefully, you??™ll never have to worry about moving your backup files to a new location. But if you
do have to, wouldn??™t you rather use a method that doesn??™t involve transmitting a multiterabyte file over
the network or striping it amongst ten tape drives? I never create database files larger than the media I
would use to move them. For tape drives, that would be 40-80GB. If my only method for moving is to
burn files onto a DVD, it??™s 4GB. I??™ve never had to resort to burning to a CD, but if I did, the maximum file
size would be 650MB.
Storage technology is growing by leaps and bounds, and hopefully two to three years after writing
this, portable storage will be able to effectively handle large data files. Until that time, I??™m keeping a
close eye on my file sizes.
If you??™re lucky enough to never have a disaster scenario and never have to restore from a backup
or move data from one location to another, knock yourself out??”fill that 16TB file.
