"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Yes, a full database backup now includes full-text
indexes??”you can start pondering whether this is a good or bad thing. I??™ll discuss the
implications shortly.
Reducing Backup/Restore Time
Here??™s the main point of this entire chapter: you can back up individual files and filegroups
to maintain a reasonable backup window. If your full database backup would take
22 hours to complete, you could instead back up individual files and filegroups each
night of the week. Properly designed, this same technique can speed up the restore
process as well. This takes us to the next section on the particulars of backing up and
restoring files and filegroups.
CHAPTER 4 n BACKING UP AND RESTORING FILES AND FILEGROUPS 86
nNote Numerous third-party products can significantly reduce backup/restore procedures by means of
compression. These products are sound, and I both use and recommend many of them. However, I caution
my clients (and myself) not to rely on them. What if pricing goes through the roof when there is market saturation?
Also, using a third-party product means you??™ve now introduced another application that may require
bug fixes or security patches.
