"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Restore and Disaster Categories
How do restore operations fit in with the disaster categories? I??™ve split backup and recovery
into two separate chapters, but you need to think about the ramifications of any
disaster scenario both in terms of how you should back up your database and how you
need to restore your database. When it comes to restoring, take the following factors into
account:
??? Environmental: Be prepared to restore to a completely new location in case of an
environmental disaster. Be familiar with the methods to restore the master, move
data file locations while restoring, and so on.
??? Hardware: Hardware performance, whether it??™s a tape or disk drive, is as important
to restore operations as it is to backup operations. The longer the process runs, the
higher the likelihood of errors.
??? Media: The quality of media plays a big role in restore operations. Poor quality tape
or disk drives could result in the need to restore random damaged pages; this is not
a scenario anyone wants.
??? Process: Point-in-time restores, and the log-mark restore in particular, can be an
excellent way to deal with process errors.
