"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

nNote It may sound inane, but having something go wrong or making a blatant mistake is really the best
way to learn. Most of the content of this book comes from my years of either watching the impact of other??™s
mistakes or learning from my own. Mistakes, errors, and even disasters are the best drivers toward learning.
The expression ???hindsight is 20/20??? is true??”it??™s much easier to see what should have been done after
you??™ve seen the impact of failing to do it.
CHAPTER 3 n RESTORING A DATABASE 67
tempdb
Technically, you don??™t back up or restore tempdb. You can move it, however, and this
topic often comes up during a restore operation. If you have a massive disaster incident
that requires new hardware, you could be in a situation where you need to change the
physical location of tempdb. Remember that the master maintains the location of
tempdb. If you place your tempdb in a location other than its original, you??™ll need to
update that information. You don??™t do this by backing up and restoring or by detaching
and reattaching. You need to use an ALTER DATABASE statement.
