"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

??? Hardware: There really isn??™t a direct correlation between recovery modes and a
hardware failure; you??™re facing the same challenges regardless.
??? Media: Failure here has the same results regardless of the recovery mode.
??? Process: Here??™s where the recovery mode has an impact. If Simple Recovery mode is
used, it is impossible to restore to a point in time; it is impossible to go back to just
before the failure occurred. Bulk-Logged Recovery might help, but you can only
restore to the point of the last transaction log backup, not to a more granular point
in time. To mitigate process failure, Full Recovery mode is the optimal option.
??? User: Similar to process failures, Simple Recovery mode is of no help. Because user
failures are unpredictable, Bulk-Logged Recovery might not even be an option. Full
Recovery is the only mode that lets you restore to a specific point in time.
Backup Locations
The following list discusses the impact of backup location on the ease of recovery. Again,
I??™ve broken this list down into category of failure.
??? Environmental: The backup location is one of the only means of mitigating environmental
failures.
