"Pro SQL Server Disaster Recovery"

Once that happens, future backups will fail. To ensure that the backup file contains
only a single backup, you need to include the WITH INIT clause:
BACKUP DATABASE AdventureWorks TO DISK='D:\data\AW.bak' WITH INIT
This ensures that every time the backup is performed, the file is overwritten. Accidentally
appending backups to a single file is a common mistake for new DBAs.
Log Backup
In Full Recovery or Bulk-Logged Recovery mode, log backups are essential not only for
recovery purposes but also for managing the size of the active transaction log. Simple
Recovery mode is the only one that actually deletes committed transactions periodically.
If never backed up, transaction logs for a database in Full Recovery and Bulk-Logged
Recovery mode will continue to grow until they consume all available disk space. If the
disk is filled completely, the database will stop.
The command for backup log files is nearly identical to a full backup:
BACKUP LOG AdventureWorks_Log TO DISK = 'D:\data\AW.trn'
The name referenced is the logical name for the transaction log file, not just the
name of the database.
