"Practical Data Analysis and Reporting with BIRT"

This can be a
bit tricky if there are namespaces used in the XML file. For our example, namespaces
are not used in the XML Data Source.
1. Open EmployeeReportCH5.rptDesign. Under the Data Explorer tab, rightclick
on Data Sets, and select New Data Set.
2. Enter the following information:
Data Set Name: dsetXMLEmployee
Data Source: dsXMLEmployee
Data Set Type: XML Data Set
3. On the next screen, make sure the Use the XML file defined in Data Source
is checked and click Next.

4. On the Table Mapping screen, use the following XPath Expression:
/Employees/Employee.
5. On the next screen, click on each on the nodes, and then click on the
button to create a new field mapping. You can click on the preview button
to make sure your field mapping works correctly..
6. Click Finish.
Working with Data
[ 82 ]
The next screen allows us to edit the Data Set after we create it. This allows us to do
things after the fact, like filter through the data and create additional columns based
on computations. Let's take a look at doing that for this Data Set. Let's say we want
to filter the data returned by this Data Set, to only return people with the jobTitle of
Developer. If you are going into this example right from Step 6 of the last example,
you can skip the first few steps.
1. From the Data Explorer tab, double-click on dsetXMLEmployee.
