"Practical Data Analysis and Reporting with BIRT"

Chapter 5

3. The following screen is where all the JDBC connection information is put in.
From the drop-down list for Driver Class, select the org.eclipse.birt.report.
data.oda.sampledb.Driver class. It will automatically fill in your database
URL with the appropriate JDBC URL for the sample database.
4. Click on Test Connection to make sure you can connect. Then, click Finish.
For the sample database this was very simple, because the JDBC URL template was
already filled in for us. Let's say we didn't have the JDBC URL automatically filled
in for us. Let's look at using the Derby JDBC driver that is set up, and explore the
Manage Drivers Dialog a little:
1. You will need to extract the Sample Database from its archived format in the
BIRT plug-ins folder. For this you will need to know where you have BIRT
installed. In my case, I have the BIRT Report Designer installed under
C:\eclipse\birt_2_2\eclipse. So I need to open the file C:\eclipse\
Birt_2_2\eclipse\plugins\org.eclipse.birt.report.data.oda.
sampledb_2.2.0.v20070531\db\BirtSample.jar in an archive program,
such as WinZip or WinRAR. Don't worry about the extension being .jar
instead of .zip. The file is still a ZIP file.

2. Extract the BirtSample.jar file to a known location, such as in your
workspace or a temporary folder.
