Most external hard drives plug into an external AC
adapter and connect to a (Universal Serial Bus) USB
or FireWire port. Some external hard drives have
ports to connect to both USB and FireWire. After you
connect the device to a USB or FireWire port, your
computer recognizes the device and you can copy files
to the hard drive. If you get in the habit of copying
all updated folders to the device once a week, you??™ll
always have a backup of your digital images and
other important information.
TIP
If you have spare hard drives you??™re not using, consider
investing in a USB/FireWire hard drive enclosure. These
devices enable you to house and protect hard drives
you use for data backup. You hook the hard drive up to
an IDE cable inside the device. After you secure your
hard drive in the enclosure, connect the device to its AC
adapter and to a USB or FireWire port on your computer.
After you turn the device on, your computer recognizes
it as an external hard drive. You can purchase USB hard
drive enclosures at your local computer store.
