QUICKFACTS
DECIPHERING HISTOGRAMS
A histogram is a visual reference of the distribution
of pixels in the tonal ranges of an image. You can
use a histogram to monitor the results of your edits in
Photoshop Elements and in the Camera Raw dialog box.
The left side of the histogram displays the shadows, the
middle displays the midtones, and the right side of the
histogram displays the highlights. The following image
shows an image histogram. The spike on the left side of
the histogram indicates that some detail in the shadow
area has been lost. If
you see a histogram
with a spike on the
right side, it means that
some highlight details
have been blown out. A
histogram is displayed
in the upper-right
corner of the Camera
Raw dialog box. To
display a histogram in
Photoshop Elements,
choose Window |
Histogram.
TIP
Hold down the SHIFT key to constrain a rectangular
marquee selection to a square or to constrain an elliptical
marquee selection to a circle. Remember to release the
mouse button prior to releasing the SHIFT key, or the
selection will no longer be constrained.
