"Digital Photography QuickSteps, 2nd Edition"

You have several tools available for selecting portions of an
image, which will be discussed in the upcoming sections.
Create a Rectangular or Elliptical
Selection
1. Open the image you want to edit.
2. Select the Rectangular Marquee tool to create a rectangular
selection, or select the Elliptical Marquee tool to create a circular
selection.
3. Click inside the image, and drag to size the marquee. As you drag,
you??™ll see moving lines around the border of your selection as
currently sized. The moving border is often referred to as an ???army of
marching ants.???
4. Release the mouse button when the selection is the desired size.
Create Selections with the Lasso Tools
You can create a freeform selection with the Lasso tools. There are three Lasso
tools: the Lasso tool, the Polygonal Lasso tool, and the Magnetic Lasso tool.
The Lasso tools reside as a single icon on the toolbox. To reveal them, click the
triangle in the lower-right corner of the last used Lasso tool to reveal a fly-out
menu. Click the desired tool to make it the active Lasso tool:
??? The Lasso tool enables you to draw a freeform selection by clicking and dragging. If
you??™re good with a mouse, you can create precise selections in this manner.
