"Digital Photography QuickSteps, 2nd Edition"

Some photographers prefer to apply
sharpening in Photoshop Elements, as it provides more control over the process.
10. Drag the Luminance Smoothing slider if your image appears grainy due to digital
noise, which usually occurs when an image is shot at a high ISO setting. If you use a
high Luminance Smoothing value, you lose image detail. When you apply luminous
smoothing, view the image at 100 percent, and then use the Hand tool to pan to an
area of the image that contains shadows. This is where noise will be most noticeable.
11. Drag the Color Reduction slider if your image shows signs of color noise. Color noise
looks like random speckles of color, and is most noticeable in shadow areas of the
image.
12. Click Open to open the image in Photoshop Elements. You can then edit the image
using Photoshop Elements commands and save the file in a format supported by the
application. Your original RAW file is unaltered. All changes you make in the Camera
Raw dialog box are saved in a separate file known as a sidecar file.
TIP
To increase the Shadows, Brightness, Contrast, or
Saturation value by 1, press the UP ARROW key. To
decrease the Shadows, Brightness, Contrast, or
Saturation value by 1, press the DOWN ARROW key.
