??? Use an off-camera flash with a swivel head, and
angle the flash at the ceiling to bounce light on
your subject and avoid harsh shadows. Make sure
the ceiling is white; otherwise, the image will have
a color cast.
TIP
If you??™re forced to use on-camera flash when creating
a portrait, you can diffuse the light by placing a piece of
tissue over it. This results in a more flattering portrait, as
the light is much softer.

Photograph a Distant Thunderstorm
Electrical storms can be quite frightening when you??™re in one, but they can be
quite beautiful when viewed from a distance and you can see lightning pop
out of the billowing thunderheads. If you??™re patient and far enough away from
the storm to be out of harm??™s way, you may be able to capture some fantastic
images. Switch your camera to continuous shooting mode, and compose the
scene. When you see the far-off lightning start to pop, hold the shutter button,
TIP
When taking a portrait of someone at night, you should
use the camera flash only as described in Chapter 3.
Most digital camera flash units are not powerful enough
to capture night scenes.
