A geometric composition can
also include curves that lead the viewer to a center of interest that is aligned
according to the Rule of Thirds.
Use Rectangles and Squares
as Compositional Elements
One of the keys to a successful photograph is examining a scene and using
elements of the scene as part of your composition. If you have a scene with
strong geometric elements, such as rectangles or squares, use them to your best
advantage when composing the scene.
1. Walk around the scene and look for strong geometric elements. With a bit of work,
you??™ll find geometric forms in key points of your scene.
2. Look for interesting objects to draw your viewer into the rectangular element that is
your center of interest.
3. Take the picture. Figure 6-1 shows a geometric composition with a strong rectangular
element. Notice the rectangular shape created by the sign and supports. The curve
of the anchor draws the viewer into the scene, and the staff of the anchor is a strong
vertical element that leads the viewer toward the sign. The rectangular shape frames
the entry to the ship behind.
Compose a Scene with Circular Elements
Another geometric element you can use to compose your scenes is a circle.
