UICKSTEPS
USING BLUR CREATIVELY
If you??™re fortunate enough to photograph a world-class
event, such as the Tour de France, where the cyclists
often exceed 30 mph in sprints, you can capture
wonderful photographs of the cyclists by panning, as
outlined previously. However, if you??™re photographing
athletes or cyclists that are not moving rapidly, you can
blur both the athlete and the background to
create an artistic impression of motion.
1. Switch to shutter priority mode.
2. Choose a slow shutter speed of 1/15 of
a second or less.
3. Pre-focus the camera on a subject
equidistant to the place where
you??™ll take your picture, or switch to
continuous focus mode, if your camera
is so equipped.
4. Pan the camera with the athlete.
5. Press the shutter button to capture
an artistic impression of motion,
as shown here.
