PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE
WITH FLASH
When you photograph a person, pet, or group of people
with a flash camera, you may see a condition known
as red-eye. This occurs because the subject??™s pupils
are dilated to cope with the dim light. The camera flash
bounces off the person??™s retina back into the camera,
making a person??™s eyes look red and pets??™ eyes look
white. If your camera has a red-eye reduction feature,
the camera fires a pre-flash, which causes the subject??™s
pupil to close down and avoid the dilation that causes
the red-eye.
DEAL WITH RED-EYE
1. Access your camera menu.
2. Enable red-eye reduction. Refer to your camera
manual for the location of your red-eye reduction
menu command.
3. Tell the subject to look at the red-eye reduction
lamp. Refer to your camera manual for the exact
location of this device on your camera.
4. Compose and shoot the picture.
TIP
The red-eye reduction preflash may cause the subject
to blink, which means that your subject??™s eyes may be
closed when the main flash goes off. You??™ll get a more
natural picture if you correct the red-eye in an imageediting
program such as Adobe Photoshop Elements.
