Try Before You Buy
The only way you can be sure if your candidate is indeed the ideal digital
camera for you is to hold it in your hands and make sure the controls are
logically placed and comfortable for you, that the camera is easy to use, and
that it takes acceptable pictures. In other words, the only way you really can be
sure that the camera is right for you is to try before you buy. Visit a local retailer
that stocks your ideal camera. Ask the salesperson to let you hold the camera.
Turn the camera on, and notice how long it takes the camera to power up. Look
through the viewfinder, and press the shutter button halfway. Notice how
quickly the camera focuses on the subject. If the camera takes more than three
seconds to power up, or if it takes a second or two to focus, you may end up
losing spontaneous shots.
Press the shutter button all the way to take a picture. Notice how long it takes
the camera to record the picture. All digital cameras have shutter lag to some
degree (the time it takes to record the picture after you press the shutter button).
On some cameras, the lag is so short that it isn??™t noticeable. However, if the lag
is excessive, you run the risk of not capturing quickly evolving action.
