QUICKFACTS
UNDERSTANDING IMAGE QUALITY
A 10 ?— 8-inch image at 72 ppi has pixel dimensions of
720 ?— 576. Images for computer viewing require a
resolution of only 72 ppi. Photo-quality printed images,
however, require a resolution of at least 200 ppi or,
preferably, 300 ppi. If you print a 10 ?— 8-inch image with
pixel dimensions of 720 ?— 576 (a resolution of 72 ppi),
the result will be blocky and unsatisfactory. If, on the
other hand, you print an image with pixel dimensions of
3000 ?— 2400 at 300 ppi, you will get a photo-realistic
10 ?— 8-inch image, with a smooth blending of color.
Most digital cameras have a native resolution of 180 ppi
or better.

TIFF files offer the best image quality from images that are processed in camera,
while RAW offers the best overall quality. JPEG images are also processed in
the camera and are compressed, resulting in smaller file sizes. In addition to
image size, many digital cameras have a setting for image quality??”the settings
have names like ???normal,??? ???fine,??? and, with some cameras, ???super-fine.???
High-quality images result in larger file sizes and sharper pictures.
