Q: What is a pixel?
A: Short for ???picture element,??? a pixel is a single
point of color in a digital display. A pixel is
composed of varying degrees of three colors: red,
green, and blue (or RGB). The blending of varying
amounts of RGB gives each pixel its distinctive
color. On a true-color (24-bit) monitor, millions of
pixels are arranged in rows and columns packed
so tightly together that they appear to blend
into continuous tones and create a solid image.
The image size in pixels refers to the number of
vertical and horizontal rows of pixels that make
up the image. Figure 1-2 shows a high-resolution
image. Figure 1-3 is a magnified section of the
image, which allows you to see the pixels that
comprise it.
Q: What is image resolution and how does it relate to image size?
A: Image resolution is the number of pixels per inch used to create an image.
