The number of images you can store on a memory card is determined by
image resolution, which we will discuss later. The following storage devices are
commonly used by digital cameras:
??? CompactFlash cards are used on older consumer point-and-shoot cameras, as well
as on high-end digital cameras and professional digital SLR cameras. They are sturdy
and have storage capacities ranging from 8 MB to 16 GB.
??? Secure Digital (SD) cards are smaller than CompactFlash cards and yet are relatively
sturdy. They are used for information storage on many devices, including PDA (personal
digital assistant) devices and digital cameras. Secure Digital cards are available with
capacities as high as 4 GB. Owners of MMC (Multimedia Card) cards may be able to
use the cards in their digital cameras, as they are the same physical size as SD cards.
??? Microdrives are miniature hard drives and will fit all cameras that accept
CompactFlash II cards. They are less expensive than CompactFlash cards of the
same capacity and can store up to 8 GB of data.
??? Memory Stick is the storage media used by Sony digital cameras. Sony??™s Memory
Stick cards have capacities as high as 4 GB.
??? Memory Stick Duo is another storage media used by Sony digital cameras.
