Operators
??? Increases coverage
??? Increases capacity
??? Enables quadruple play
??? Competes with VoIP deployments
??? Promotes more 3G traffic
??? Increases revenues
Users
??? Increases coverage
??? Provides quadruple play options
??? Multiple voice/data lines
??? Reduces costs
??? Handoff scenarios
As discussed above, moving to IMS coupled with reduced latency times makes VoIP in wireless
more realistic. Here HS-DSCH will be used to deliver voice IP packets to the UE. The potential benefits
in capacity can be huge depending on the vocoder used, channel conditions, users voice activity
factor, header compression, congestion, receiver structures, and so on. A successful IP multimedia
subsystem deployment should have at least the following characteristics:
??? The circuit-switched voice service must be replaced with IP voice.
??? VoIP quality should be as good as the circuit switched.
??? Consistent delivery of performance.
??? Interoperable IP services.
??? Emergency call support.
??? Capacity at least as good as circuit switched.
??? Lower deployment costs.
??? Flexible upgrading.
??? Multimedia services (Voice/Video/Data).
??? Low latency.
