Interference
Estimation
Creating cost reduced, small size NodeBs for femto-cell2 applications seems to be gaining some
traction. In this case the usage scenario can be the femto-cell NodeB that will allow UE to act as your
home cordless phone. Also with advancement in the NodeB and UE, the opportunity to also behave
as a data service provider, such as WLAN exists.
Many possible problems can occur with this particular application the first deals with interference
management. How and who will coordinate the femto-cell interference on the public network is a
question deserving attention. Other potential issues deal with cost and capacity reduced versions of
the public NodeB and the type of interface to the wireline side. The last issue we wish to address is
that of handoff. This includes scenarios when the UE hands off between the private and public networks
and vice versa. This is especially problematic when ping-ponging occurs.
What is important to mention is that there is significant marketing traction in this femto-cell or
Home NodeB application. Below we provide potential benefits to both the operators and users [37].
