"Signal Processing for Wireless Communications"

9.3.1 Canonical/Classical UE Architecture Discussion
Next we provide a simple architecture so that we can discuss functionality partitioning and introduce
the impacts of supporting simultaneous services with varying degrees of acceptable quality. The high
level partitioning is provided in the block diagram shown in Fig. 9.17. We have decided to split the
responsibility across four sections: spectral conversion (i.e., RF), communication processor, applications
processor, and audio/video/data (multimedia) interface [34, 35].
Beneath each functional block we simply list a few items that deserve attention associated with
that particular block. The spectral conversion block, labeled RF section in Fig. 9.17, is responsible to
perform the frequency band switching, transmit and receive power adjustments, as well as other functions
associated with spectral up and down conversion.
The communication processor (CP) overview is given in Fig. 9.18. The communication processor
is responsible for maintaining the air interface link quality and basically delivering data ???pipes??? to the
application processor or other devices.
The block contains the AFE interface such as ADC for the receiver and DAC for the transmitter.
This also includes the RF controls such as AFC, AGC, operating frequency bands, and so
on.
