The concept of Continuous Packet Connectivity for HSUPA applies when there is no E-DCH or
HS-DPCCH data to be transmitted, here we apply DTX on the UL-DPCCH. The best compromise is
to maintain the connection and allow the UE to transmit only when required. However due to practical
reasons having very long inactivity periods can be detrimental to the system especially if the
NodeB would declare synchronization is lost. It would behoove the system to not terminate the connection
and then re-establish it when data is ready to be transmitted. This approach would introduce
unnecessary overhead and delays. Hence the CPC operational mode allows the uplink to be completely
periodically DTX-ed in order to reduce the uplink noise rise, save on UE power consumption
and reduce the interference to the other users who are actively transmitting. In order to further reduce
the UE power consumption DRX operation is possible on the downlink related HSDPA and HSUPA
channels.
