9.2.3 Competing Broadcast Technologies
In this section, we will compare two competing broadcast systems. Specifically we will compare
DVB-H to the publicly available technical specifications of MediaFLO. It is not the intention of this
section to ???sway??? the reader toward a particular direction. Rather we wish to have a place of reference
where both standards can be compared and debated against each other.
MediaFLO and DVB-H Discussion. MediaFLO is a coined term representing Media Forward Link
Only (FLO) [32]. It is a proprietary standard initially targeted for network scheduled delivery of
media during peak and off-peak times. This media content can be saved inside the terminal to be
viewed at a latter time. An intended spectrum usage in North America is the 700 MHz spectrum, this
was channel 55 on UHF TV. Lower carrier frequencies have better propagation path loss and thus less
base stations are needed to blanket a coverage area, when compared to much higher carrier
frequencies.
Reference [33] provides some technical details on the physical layer. Both MediaFLO and DVB-H
allow for various channel BWs. In Table 9.3 we provide a chart summary from the references herein.
