For example, if UEs can
only support selective combining the RNC can resynch the cells to deliver reasonably synchronized
MBMS transmissions to the UE.
In an effort to conserve UE power consumption and support simultaneous services, the UE will
use DRX on the MTCH transmission based on scheduling information. In addition, for UE with
enhanced capabilities (i.e., receive diversity, large memory) having intelligent signal processing can
be utilized for further savings in power consumption. Since the UE will be operating in various states,
there is a possibility that MBMS transmission will be interrupted due to the UE receiving a voice call,
performing IRAT measurements, general handoff hazards, and so on. The 3GPP standard states that
in general, ???data loss should be minimal.???
There are many ways to address this requirement; one method is to often send critical system
information over to the UE such as the neighboring cell information, and so on.
In MBMS services, application layer FEC is required for UEs; they are called Raptor codes [27].
As the 3GPP WCDMA system continues to evolve MBMS one method of improvement involves the
UE being capable of simultaneously receiving MBMS and dedicated services on separate carriers.
