In addition, the terminal is also capable of receiving the
cellular traffic as well; note this is a bidirectional link.
The interaction between the DVB-H and UMTS networks can take on a variety of forms. The collaborative
block diagram presented in Fig. 9.13 shows the internetwork communications occurring at
the IP level.
9.2.2 Multimedia Broadcasting Multicast Services
In this section, we will provide a description of the MBMS function within the UMTS standard.
MBMS provides a means to deliver multimedia content to the UE. Capabilities exist to offer pointto-
point (p-t-p) and point-to-multipoint (p-t-m) transmission modes [29, 30].
MBMS will use the MBMS notification indicator channel (MICH), MBMS p-t-m control channel
(MCCH), MBMS p-t-m traffic channel (MTCH), and MBMS scheduling channel (MSCH). The
MBMS p-t-p transmissions occur over the DTCH channels.
