This can allow for
future services to grow, create a reduction in the out-of-cell interference, and potentially increase the
cell radius, thus requiring less NodeBs to blanket a particular geographical area??”not to mention possibly
lowering the cost of network deployment. Also the network providers can translate this gain in
throughput into an increase in capacity, that is, VOIP users. Quite frankly, these large gains eventually
produce a better user experience, create larger service provider revenues, and offer a life extension
to HSDPA-related service.
The last point to make in this section is that the LMMSE equalizer weights are based on a covariance
matrix that consists of the desired signal??™s channel plus noise only. In other words, the interference
terms have been ignored. Now when interference is added into the channel and the LMMSE
equalizer is made aware of it, further performance improvement can be achieved. In fact, the performance
improvement becomes highly dependent on the interference power profile (IPP). The Type 3i
receiver creates a covariance matrix that includes the interfering channel information, thus offering
performance improvement that is relative to the amount of interference present.
