The SF can vary from 512 down to 4. Since the total number of chips transmitted in a time slot is
fixed, the variable SF translates into having variable number of bits in each time slot field. The time
slot formats are well defined in 3GPP Technical Specification 25.211 [18]. The fields are defined to
have the same functionality as described in the previous subsection for the uplink. The major difference
is on the uplink, where the DPDCH and DPCCH channels are code multiplexed, while they are
time multiplexed on the downlink.
There are two types of DPCH channels: those that do not include the TFCI field, for fixed rate services,
and those that include the TFCI field, for several simultaneous services. The UTRAN determines
if the TFCI field should be included.
The downlink TPC bit field duration can be 2, 4, or 8 bits, depending on the SF used. Moreover,
the possibility to have 16 bits exists when frames are affected by compressed mode (CM) operation,
specifically when SF reduction is used.
The E-DCH Relative Grant Channel (E-RGCH) time slot and frame structure is given in Fig. 7.39.
The SF is fixed at 128 and is used to carry the E-DCH relative grants.
