Modifying deployment scenarios can also be a valid solution. Here we can restrict the usage to be
outdoors only, thus saving on the building penetration loss, not to mention the in-building losses due
to the floor attenuation. For this particular case, when the user enters an indoor environment, it hands
off to an indoor pico cell, which can better serve the user.
Continuing along the lines of deployment scenarios, we could reduce the cell radius thus having
less path required to be compensated for, increasing the overall system performance margin. As you
would expect, nothing comes for free; meaning more NodeBs would need to be deployed to cover a
particular city area. This involved potentially complicated deployments as well as to increase system
cost due to requiring more NodeB to be present for a particular cell.
Generally speaking, performance improvement can be obtained if the NF can be reduced, more
powerful error correcting codes can be used, additional transmit power can be used or using smaller
cell radii. Moreover, the UE (or NodeB for that matter) can use spatial diversity or other advanced
receiver techniques to reduce the required Eb/(Io No). This reduction can be used in accommodating
more users within the cell and/or can be used to increase the user (or cell) data throughput.
