for the required signal processing operations of MIPS
and are given in Table 1.11 [38].
As these complexity estimates show, having a programmable
device by itself may not be the best solution
when considering the implications of device cost, size, as well as power consumption [39??“41].
This may initially mean that, as far as the physical layer is concerned, we can either use a multimode
receiver approach or a reconfigurable approach (this can also take on the form of an accelerator/
coprocessor, etc.). This reconfigurability can be further broken down into two parts: first, being fully
reconfigurable in the same sense as an FPGA or, second, being partially reconfigurable. Here we
choose a space or a vector subspace if you will, and create functions in that space that are reconfigurable.
For example, you may create a spread spectrum engine that can be manipulated and configured
to perform a wide variety of spread spectrum standards only. Hence, if you are looking for a TDMA
standard, then you would either move to a point solution or create another vector space engine targeted
toward mathematical operations that are typically performed in the TDMA systems.
