1.3.2 Software Defined Radio (SDR) Introduction
There are many reasons and benefits in achieving an SDR platform [37]. We will use this as a demonstration
vehicle to support the multimode receiver for the purposes of convergence.
There are a few reasons why the WLAN and WPAN components have been on the applications
side of the communication device. For starters, these technologies (WLAN, BT, GPS, UWB, etc.)
exist, in the most part, as a single-chip solution??”thus making its intellectual property separated from
the WAN, but at the same time, allowing these solutions to be considered as an ???add-on??? to the PDA
or laptop community.
