The turbo encoders have a common coder whose outputs are punctured according to a specific pattern,
to achieve the desired code rates of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5.
The RL complex PN code is generated as shown in Fig. 1.16, where we have used the spread
rate 3 chip rate, as an example.
The FL improvements come in the form of adding forward supplemental channels for data services.
A quick paging channel was introduced for increased mobile stand by times. Transmit diversity
is supported to reduce the required Eb/No and thus increase user capacity. QPSK modulation is
used for higher data rates and to support true complex-valued spreading. The FEC was enhanced to
include turbo codes for performance improvement at the higher data rates. In Table 1.
