In particular, we are referring to evolving WCDMA to HSDPA/HSUPA
and continuing to Long Term Evolution (LTE) and CDMA2000 to 1xEVDO/DV (Evolution Data
Optimized/Data Voice) systems.

1.2 WIRELESS STANDARDS OVERVIEW
This section will provide an overview of various wireless standards. It is our intention to present a
few wireless standards that encompass the full spectrum of service capabilities. On one side of the
spectrum, we have the Personal Area Network (PAN), which accommodates low-mobility users operating
in a small coverage area. We then discuss the Local Area Network (LAN) and continue to the
other side with the Wide Area Network (WAN), which accommodates high-mobility users operating
in large coverage areas.
As we progress through our book, we will learn why certain system design decisions were made
for particular wireless standards. It is also our intention to present 2G cellular systems as well as their
respective 3G cellular systems. These overviews will serve as a reference as well as for the sake of
comparison as we latter discuss the evolutionary paths of these standards.
Since the cellular standards have classically been devoted to voice communications, we would
like to present a block diagram on a transmitter for such an application (see Fig.
