PREFACE
The proliferation of wireless digital communications has created a foundation of what will become
an unprecedented demand for capacity while simultaneously supporting global mobility. This growth
of ubiquitous systems will force designers to make both challenging and difficult technology decisions.
As in any field, decisions made with a sound engineering foundation will prevail. It is for this
reason that I have written this book.
The topics covered in this book are intended to provide the reader with a good understanding of
the issues designers are faced with every day. The book??™s philosophy is to start with a comparison of
modulation schemes and continue to the multipath fading channel, where computer simulation models
are contrasted. Various coherent and noncoherent demodulation techniques used in the receiver
are presented and explained in detail. Next, performance improvement techniques are provided followed
by select digital signal processing functions. An overview of the WCDMA cellular system is
provided prior to presenting its evolutionary path. A comparison of computer simulation techniques
used in error estimation is discussed.
